This morning I was walking in the rain and found myself in a playful, joyful mood. In that moment it was like being a kid again. I stepped in a puddle on purpose and laughed about it afterward. When was the last time you had a playful moment in the rain? That brief moment I spent playing in the rain allowed me to connect to my Spirit. I allowed the rain to wash away my cares and thoughts of the impending day. It was a treat to just be in the moment.
The rain reminded me about connecting to my Spirit. I began to think of the many ways that allow me to connect to my Spirit. One of the easiest ways for me to get out of myself is to connect with a baby. Babies instinctually live in the now. They remind us how fragile life is and how important it is to live in the moment. You ever been around a baby when they need to eat or have their diaper changed? They ask for what they want when they want it. They don’t wait around for adults to get ready. If they don’t get what they want they won’t stop asking, they’ll scream louder until they get attention. Have you seen a child at play? They appear as though they haven’t a care in the world. The only moment that exists is the one they are currently in. We adults could take a few lessons from babies.
Another way I connect with my spirit is through animals. Animals show up in the world consistently the same. I have never come home from work to find my little doggie with an attitude. Now, I found many people to have attitudes, but not my dog. He consistently shows up in the world with unconditional love. He is loyal, and is always ready to show me love. He lets me know he is happy to see me by wagging his tail uncontrollably. He loves me more than I love myself sometimes. He loves hanging out with me. Even if we are just sitting in each other’s space and doing nothing. He is just happy to be with me. I could learn a thing or two from him. Such as, I could consistently smile at everyone I encounter during my day, I could be happy to just be in the moment with others, and I could show up with joy and non-judgment each and everyday. Wow, what lessons we could take from dogs.
When I walk in nature, I’m instantly tapped into my Spirit. There is something about walking among the trees or alongside a river bank; I lose myself near water. Water is so cleansing. I like listening to birds chirping. Birds seem so happy. They are busy preparing and sharing. What a concept to be able to whistle while you work. I think I heard that saying somewhere before…lol. When I am stressed out, wounded or up tight, I take a walk and use this time of connection with nature to begin enjoying the simple things again; especially nature and God’s creations. Have you ever just looked at the blue sky, green grass or watched the ocean waves rolling in and out? I can feel my body relaxing right now. Nature surely has a way of connecting us to our Spirit.
What about when you are doing something you are passionate about. One of my passions is gardening. I love my succulent plants. When I have my hands in dirt I connect to a place of peace and inner joy. Gardening is like meditation to me. I get in rhythm with the plants, the dirt, and with nature. It is so sweet and tender. What are you passionate about? What can you connect with that takes you to that place of Spirit?
There are endless benefits that I can receive by being in tune with my spirit. I can always connect to spirit. I can begin my changing my attitude. I can change my attitude just like I change my clothing. I can choose which attitude I put on everyday. I can also make a physical change through diet and exercise. Food can truly get in the way of me connecting to my Spirit. When there is less junk-food in my body it is no mystery that I function better. I have to remember the body is the dwelling place for my spirit, in a sense my spirit will have more room to breathe and to think clearly; ultimately making my connection to Spirit a little easier. How are you connecting to your Spirit today?
